Snapchat’s Discover section is popular in France, where content from publishers like Cosmopolitan and Le Monde attracts 10 million monthly users, Reuters reports.
The figure, which is equal to about 15% of France’s overall population, indicates that Snap’s emphasis on targeting wealthier countries for international growth is panning out.
Snap last reported 173 million daily users in Q2 2017, with 75 million users coming from its North America region, 57 million users from Europe, and the remaining 42 million coming from its Rest of World region.
The high monthly user number isn’t entirely surprising, given Snap’s significant penetration among smartphone users in France. Twenty-five percent of people in France with smartphones use Snapchat daily, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said during the company’s Q2 earnings call.
The monthly user figure can help Snap onboard more European Discover partners.Snap also shares 50% of ad revenue with advertising partners, which can further entice prospective publisher partners to join the platform. Onboarding more partners would create more available Discover content, potentially boosting European and French user engagement and exposing these users to more ads. This could in turn help boost Snap’s average revenue per user (ARPU) in Europe, which stood at 39 cents in Q2 2017, well below the company’s North America ARPU of $1.05.
