A group of high school basketball players in Many, Louisiana have been arrested after a video of a sexual assault on another student circulated on the social media app Snapchat.
The arrested students include one 18-year-old, Quacie Kerlegon, who was arrested on charges of sexual battery and 2nd degree kidnapping and booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center, Louisiana State Police wrote on Facebook.
Seven other students who are minors and therefore not named were also arrested on charges including sexual battery, 2nd degree kidnapping, and pornography involving juveniles. Police identified those involved as Many High School students but did not identify the gender of involved parties.
Sources who have seen the Snapchat footage say it showed the group holding down a male student and inserting an object into his rectum while he screamed, the New York Daily News reports.
The group also reportedly assaulted a second student in a similar way on a different day, local station KTBS reports.
The seven minors arrested were taken to Ware Youth Center in Coushatta, Louisiana. Meanwhile, Many High School has canceled at least four basketball games in the past two weeks. The Sabine Parish School Board released a statement posted to Facebook that says it has opened an investigation into the incident, reported on January 31.
"As this matter involves students, we cannot release additional information other than to assure the public that we are cooperating with law enforcement and that student safety remains a priority," the statement reads. "Disciplinary action will be taken against all persons who are found to have been involved."
The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations Special Victims Unit has been investigating the incident since early February, and the case is still ongoing, according to the state police Facebook status.
